This course is designed to help students understand the nature, prevention and control of international crimes including drug, arms and human trafficking, money laundering, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and public corruption. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the course uniquely combines the fields of criminology, law and other social sciences such as political science, sociology, and international relations to examine issues related to international crime, transnational crime, international relations, and domestic and international criminal justice. Reflecting on why perpetrators commit atrocities and discussing the value of alternative responses like truth commissions and amnesties, the course also examines the challenges that confront the understanding, prevention and control of international and transnational crimes.
